The Saints And The Roughnecks

The article by Chambliss, The Saints and the Roughnecks, focuses on many aspects of juvenile iniquity and the community in which it occurs. He spent two days observing two different groups of boys that live within the alike community. Chambliss refers to these two groups and the Roughnecks and the Saints. The two groups attended the same school and were touch on in the same amount of delinquent behaviors. The Saints spent the volume of their time being constantly occupied with truancy, drinking, wild driving, junior theft, and vandalism (Chambliss p. 126). The community had different responses to the delinquent acts carried out by each group, even though the acts were virtually the same. The three major factors that impacted the different responses of the community are: visibility, demeanor, and biasness.
The Saints were young boys that came from middle-class gaberdine families. They were all involved in extra curricular school activities and were all on the academic track to college. on the whole together, their grade average was a B and two of the boys (out of 8) were non far from straight As. The Saints were popular in school and almost all of them held office in the savant government. Six of the boys were athletes. They were always well dressed, well mannered, and drove strait-laced cars.



The teachers seemed to always dampen them the benefit of the doubt. For example, if one of the boys did not do well on a test the teacher would give him a better grade than he actually realise because she knew he was capable of doing better (Chambliss p. 128).
The Roughnecks were young boys that came from low-class white families. They were average students. None of them ever failed, but on the otherwise hand, none of them ever did better than a C. pull down though the Roughnecks are not that different from the Saints, everyone agreed that the not-so-well-dressed, not-so-well-mannered, and no-so-rich boys were headed for vex (Chambliss p. 129).
